Artist’s Statement

Victoria Heryet was born in the UK and emigrated to Canada at the age of 14.  She received her art education at the Kootenay School of Art in Nelson, BC. Freelancing in the Art Departments of newspapers and magazines, including Vancouver Magazine, her fine art career evolved as she developed her illustration and lettering portfolio, also working with agencies and doing private commissions. Painting became her focus when she had her children and wanted to work from her home studio.

Her paintings started out as whimsical nursery rhyme collages incorporating detailed illustrations, collage and lettering. Later she began painting night scenes; capturing pools of light from neon and street lights. She has always had a fascination with architecture, focusing on old, weathered buildings with character and texture. She has made studies of the old neighbourhoods of Vancouver as well as areas of the UK and France. She also takes on regular painting commissions and creates lasting keepsakes including people’s homes, pets and vintage cars.

Victoria is interested in all things creative. Her art practice includes regular  figure drawing sessions. She has created collages of the hundreds of drawings she has amassed from these sessions. In addition, she paints portraits of people living on the street.

Victoria owns and operates Vancouver Chalk Works – a Vancouver company specializing in creative chalkboards for businesses and events. In this capacity she is able to share her creative lettering skills on a daily basis.

Her art, creative lettering and illustrations have been accepted, published, and have won awards in juried shows in Canada and internationally. She was recently a Finalist  (25 of 10, 000 entries) in the “My Canada, My Inspiration” national coin design contest celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday, featured on Canadian coins produced by the Canadian Mint.

Her art is included in corporate collections including Fairmont Hotels, Timeraiser and the Port of Vancouver.

Victoria works from her quirky and blissful little studio in Ladner, BC.
